Threats and attacks define the federal executive’s relationship with the media
2019 was the first year of the century in which the number of non-democratic countries surpassed the number of democratic countries around the world. According to the V-DEM institute, 54% of the world’s population lived under autocratic regimes and another 35% lived in regimes with autocratic inclinations. In this scenario, Brazil has drawn attention as one of the biggest declines in democracy rates in recent years.
A decisive turning point towards autocratization is the restriction of press freedom. In the country, there are several cases of attacks on the press. On one hand, it is true that violence against reporters, journalists, and the media in general is an old phenomenon, but on the other hand, the presidential election of 2018 has opened a new era of hatred and attacks on journalists. Among 180 countries, Brazil appears in 107th position in the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) World Press Freedom Ranking of 2020 and is in a downward spiral in recent years.
Since his presidential investiture, Mr. Jair Bolsonaro has imposed restrictions on the work of journalists and marked his stance of combating the press, which is aggravated through insults to media professionals and vehicles – recurrently referred by the president as “garbage” -, the spread of fake news, and the adoption of formal measures that harm the press. In 2019, the National Federation of Journalists (FENAJ) recorded 116 attacks by Bolsonaro on the press and 245 occurrences only in the first half of 2020. During the COVID-19 Pandemic, this scenario worsened with intimidation of journalists during the coverage of the Planalto Palace, the discrediting of information about the pandemic, and even the encouragement of surveillance in hospitals – given the president’s supposed distrust of data on infection and treatment.
Check out the following set of actions and behaviors by state actors between 2019 and 2020 that, by hitting the press, brought risks to Brazilian democracy.
